Overview
Overlords are large floating Zerg support organisms rather than ordinary attack creatures. Their bulbous bodies, hanging tendrils and slow movement distinguish them from the nimble Mutalisk. In original StarCraft they extend the Swarm's control over its forces, detect concealed enemies and, after an upgrade, carry other creatures inside their bodies. Their lack of a direct weapon makes protection and placement more important than aggressive pursuit.
StarCraft II retains the supply-support function but separates detection into the evolved Overseer, so an ordinary sequel Overlord should not inherit the original creature's full detection role. Transport access also depends on the game's version and upgrades. This profile covers the recurring organism while marking those functional changes. It does not apply the unrelated fantasy title overlord to a separate species or treat every airborne Zerg support form as interchangeable.
First appearances & development
Introduced in StarCraft (1998). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Original StarCraft, expansion, Remastered and StarCraft II versions can differ in anatomy, abilities and roles; balance numbers are not stable creature lore.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard's creature-specific Classic strategy guide directly supports the original form's appearance, abilities and limitations. StarCraft supplies the selected original depiction; StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty provides a second released treatment. Original StarCraft, expansion, Remastered and StarCraft II versions can differ in anatomy, abilities and roles; balance numbers are not stable creature lore.
Selected bibliography

Family, evolution & connections
Drone (StarCraft)
The original guide explicitly lists Drones among organisms carried inside Overlords after Ventral Sacs development. Carrying workers is a colony-support relationship, not evidence of common immediate parentage.
Portuguese man o’ war (Physalia physalis)
Blizzard explicitly compares the Overlord’s appearance to the Portuguese man o’ war. NOAA identifies the real animal as a colonial siphonophore; this resemblance does not establish a creator’s causal inspiration or transfer its actual biology into the fictional organism.
