Overview
Drones are the Swarm's basic workers, gathering minerals and Vespene gas while preparing the living infrastructure that supports further growth. Their unusual construction process transforms the worker itself into a Zerg structure. A building therefore begins through a creature's metamorphosis rather than an independent machine assembled by a surviving technician. This biological economy makes the Drone as important to the colony as its more conspicuous combat forms.
Original StarCraft and StarCraft II preserve that central relationship, while changing building choices, timings and specific interactions. Most Zerg structures depend on Creep, but expanding Hatcheries prevent that rule from being described as an absolute ban on construction beyond existing colonies. Burrowing can shelter workers once the appropriate development is available. A Drone can defend itself weakly, yet its primary identity remains gathering and growth rather than a dedicated battlefield predator.
First appearances & development
Introduced in StarCraft (1998). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Original StarCraft, expansion, Remastered and StarCraft II versions can differ in anatomy, abilities and roles; balance numbers are not stable creature lore.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard's creature-specific Classic strategy guide directly supports the original form's appearance, abilities and limitations. StarCraft supplies the selected original depiction; StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty provides a second released treatment. Original StarCraft, expansion, Remastered and StarCraft II versions can differ in anatomy, abilities and roles; balance numbers are not stable creature lore.

Living Zerg structures in original StarCraft
The official guide says the Drone itself becomes a living structure; cancelling before completion can restore the worker, while completion consumes it. This is fictional development and a game construction mechanic, not reproduction or evolutionary branching.
