Overview

Defilers are scorpion-like Zerg creatures that support an army through destructive biochemicals rather than a direct physical attack. Their Plague damages affected creatures and structures, while Dark Swarm releases a cloud of smaller living organisms that interferes with ranged targeting. The original guide makes the protection conditional: melee attacks, splash damage and special abilities can still threaten units within that cloud. It is therefore concealment with explicit limits, not absolute invulnerability.

An evolved Defiler can Consume friendly Zerg organisms to replenish the energy used by its abilities, linking its battlefield endurance to the sacrifice of allied creatures. Escorts serve both protection and a possible biological resource. Original StarCraft and Remastered provide the selected primary treatments; later support organisms should not automatically inherit this repertoire. This entry records fictional biochemistry and game-defined effects without equating Plague with an actual infectious disease or describing its numerical limits as stable lore.

Zergling

Blizzard describes Defilers feeding on other Zerg and being accompanied by Zerglings, while the guide specifically recommends Zerglings as economical targets for Consume. The connection combines an explicit fictional feeding relationship with its classic-game energy mechanic. It is not kinship or real ecological evidence, and the named ability’s targeting and numerical rules should remain scoped to this game version.

Dark Swarm insects in original StarCraft

Blizzard describes small creatures covering the Defiler, then being projected into a protective insect cloud. Neither their species nor their genetic descent from the Defiler is supplied.
