Overview

Mutalisks are agile flying Zerg creatures whose attacks launch a living projectile called a Glaive Wurm. In the original game, that projectile can ricochet between nearby targets, making a clustered group vulnerable in a different way from a single distant victim. A Mutalisk can attack both ground and air opponents, giving the Swarm a mobile airborne predator rather than a stationary defensive organism.

Blizzard's early description extends Mutalisk movement into space while leaving its mechanism uncertain, an in-world ambiguity rather than an explanation grounded in real biology. Original StarCraft also allows a Mutalisk to metamorphose into a Guardian, with Brood War adding the Devourer branch. StarCraft II retains Mutalisks but reorganizes other flying forms and development pathways. The original transformation options are therefore not asserted as an unchanged rule across every later game.

First appearances & development

Introduced in StarCraft (1998). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Original StarCraft, expansion, Remastered and StarCraft II versions can differ in anatomy, abilities and roles; balance numbers are not stable creature lore.

Canon & continuity

Blizzard's creature-specific Classic strategy guide directly supports the original form's appearance, abilities and limitations. StarCraft supplies the selected original depiction; StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty provides a second released treatment. Family, evolution & connections

Documented · ecological connection

Guardian (StarCraft)

The official Classic StarCraft guide identifies the Guardian as one possible completed transformation of a Mutalisk, enabled by a Greater Spire. Cancelling during the cocoon phase returns the Mutalisk, whereas completion is irreversible in this mechanic. This records a fictional form relationship; it does not make a Guardian the biological descendant species of a real organism.

Devourer (StarCraft)

Blizzard’s guide presents the Devourer as an alternative Mutalisk morph available in Brood War after a Greater Spire is established. The completed Devourer cannot subsequently become a Guardian. The two outcomes therefore branch from the Mutalisk rather than forming a single linear chain. This concerns canonical fictional metamorphosis, not sexual parentage or real-world phylogenetic divergence.

Glaive Wurms

The guide identifies the ricocheting attack as smaller creatures produced and projected by the Mutalisk. This fictional weapon relationship is not a documented parent–child pedigree.
