Overview

Zerglings are small, fast assault organisms deployed in large numbers by the Swarm. Their hooked forelimbs and jaws make them close-range attackers rather than projectile specialists. Blizzard's original guide describes them as mutations of a dune-running species and explains their paired emergence from one larva through their comparatively simple genetic pattern. A single creature is vulnerable, while coordinated packs can surround opponents or overwhelm an undefended position.

The original game and StarCraft II preserve this recognizable role without preserving every upgrade or battlefield interaction. In the sequel, selected Zerglings can develop into Banelings, a distinct explosive form rather than an ability possessed by every Zergling. These entries treat the creature as a manufactured biological soldier within a wider civilization; its priority reflects monster coverage, not a claim that all Zerg are mindless animals.

Dune-runners of Zz’gash

Blizzard’s classic guide connects Zerglings closely with the fictional dune-runners of Zz’gash and presents absorption of their DNA as a believed explanation. This records the source’s qualified in-universe ancestry claim, rather than upgrading it to independently proved history. Zerg-directed mutation is fictional biotechnology; neither creature is a real taxon, and the passage provides no branching topology or dates.
