Overview

Hydralisks are serpentine Zerg soldiers with a raised torso, armored head and hooked forelimbs. Their defining weapon is a supply of sharp spines projected from the upper carapace, allowing a ground creature to threaten both terrestrial opponents and aircraft. They therefore occupy a different battlefield niche from the fast, exclusively close-range Zergling, supporting the Swarm with concentrated ranged attacks.

In the original game, burrowing conceals a Hydralisk but does not let it fire while underground. Brood War introduces the Lurker as a separate developed form whose underground attack reverses that restriction. StarCraft II changes production requirements, upgrades and movement conditions while retaining the Hydralisk's central silhouette and ranged role. Exact costs or attack values describe a particular ruleset and should not be mistaken for permanent measurements of fictional anatomy.

Lurker (StarCraft)

Blizzard’s Brood War guide specifies that a Hydralisk can morph into a Lurker after the appropriate Hydralisk Den research. The transformation can be cancelled before completion; the completed Lurker replaces the earlier unit. This is a canonical fictional developmental pathway and game mechanic, not parent–child genealogy or evidence for evolution in real populations.
