Overview
Guardians are heavy flying Zerg creatures developed from Mutalisks in original StarCraft. Their enlarged protective shells and reduced mobility accompany a long-range attack against ground targets. That specialization lets them bombard defensive positions from the air, but it also leaves them dependent on escorts when enemy aircraft approach. A Guardian's visual bulk therefore describes a siege organism, not an all-purpose aerial combatant.
The original guide presents the form as a possible mature or nesting state while documenting its battlefield development from a Mutalisk. That tentative biological interpretation should remain distinct from the player's explicit transformation command. StarCraft: Remastered preserves the original game and its expansion with updated visual presentation, providing a second primary treatment of this form. StarCraft II's different airborne roster is not used to imply that every Mutalisk necessarily follows the original Guardian pathway.
