Overview
Dark Souls' basilisk is a frog-like creature whose danger comes from clouds of curse-producing mist. Groups occupy places such as the Depths and the Great Hollow, where narrow routes can make avoiding that mist difficult. Its rounded body and jumping movement distinguish it from the serpent-like basilisk of many traditional accounts and from Harry Potter's enormous snake.
The encounter emphasizes accumulated exposure rather than a universally lethal glance. Curse mechanics and their consequences belong to the chosen game version, while later Souls titles reuse similar creatures with changed systems. Their unusual appearance invites interpretation, but this profile does not invent a creator, society or supernatural ancestry. Observed attacks, locations and the game's status effect provide the firm basis for describing this specific monster, with exact resistance values left to a versioned guide.
First appearances & development
Dark Souls (2011), original game. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Dark Souls I unless stated otherwise; sequels, DLC, remasters and community theories are distinguished from the original encounter.
Canon & continuity
The released game's encounter, items and dialogue form the primary basis. The linked secondary guide supplies identification, location and behavioral details; Future Press confirms an official enemy encyclopedia exists. Its individual pages were not accessed in this task. Patch-dependent mechanics and community interpretations remain separate from explicit game content, and no quoted game text is reproduced.
