Overview
Vagrants are unusual Dark Souls creatures connected to items or humanity lost through the game's online systems. Their presence can carry an indirect trace of another player's actions into a world that otherwise seems isolated. Passive examples resemble small eggs on legs, while hostile examples have a more crab-like outline and can launch dangerous projectiles.
The game's manual provides the broad connection between lost resources and Vagrant enemies; community investigation explains more detailed spawning conditions. Those technical findings should be distinguished from a fully developed in-world mythology. Different forms flee or attack, and red phantom versions add another variation. This entry describes a genuine creature encounter and its documented network context without claiming that every abandoned item instantly becomes a monster, or that rare appearances occur identically in every release and online environment.
First appearances & development
Dark Souls (2011), original game's online systems. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Dark Souls I unless stated otherwise; sequels, DLC, remasters and community theories are distinguished from the original encounter.
Canon & continuity
The released game's encounter, items and dialogue form the primary basis. The linked secondary guide supplies identification, location and behavioral details; Future Press confirms an official enemy encyclopedia exists. Its individual pages were not accessed in this task. Patch-dependent mechanics and community interpretations remain separate from explicit game content, and no quoted game text is reproduced.
