Overview
A crystal lizard is a small, many-legged creature carrying a bright crystal on its back. Its distinctive sound can alert an attentive player before it is clearly visible. Unlike most enemies, it generally attempts to escape when approached, turning the encounter into a brief pursuit through terrain that may be dangerous in its own right.
Defeating one provides upgrade materials, giving these elusive animals an important practical role in character progression. Dark Souls' handling of missed and defeated lizards differs from the earlier Demon's Souls system, despite the related design. Regional drops and reload behavior should be checked within the selected edition. The profile follows the first Dark Souls game rather than projecting the larger crystal creatures of sequels onto it, and avoids inventing a natural process by which the fictional minerals grow.
First appearances & development
Dark Souls (2011), selected franchise treatment; a related design appears earlier in Demon's Souls. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Dark Souls I unless stated otherwise; sequels, DLC, remasters and community theories are distinguished from the original encounter.

The released game's encounter, items and dialogue form the primary basis. The linked secondary guide supplies identification, location and behavioral details; Future Press confirms an official enemy encyclopedia exists. Its individual pages were not accessed in this task. Patch-dependent mechanics and community interpretations remain separate from explicit game content, and no quoted game text is reproduced.
