Overview
Dark Souls' hydras are giant aquatic serpents with several heads reaching above the surface of deep water. The encounters in Darkroot Basin and Ash Lake use the surrounding shoreline as part of the threat: approaching carelessly can lead to a fall into water as well as a strike from the creature. Distant projectile attacks make simple retreat hazardous.
At closer range, lunging heads create opportunities to attack them individually. This combat pattern is different from the familiar mythological idea that each severed head necessarily produces replacements; that rule is not assumed for these game creatures. The two hydras also differ in location and rewards, so the entry preserves them as related encounters rather than one uniquely named individual. Their anatomy and attacks are documented, while an unsupported account of reproduction or connection to specific gods is avoided.
First appearances & development
Dark Souls (2011), original game. This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. This profile follows Dark Souls I unless stated otherwise; sequels, DLC, remasters and community theories are distinguished from the original encounter.
Canon & continuity
The released game's encounter, items and dialogue form the primary basis. The linked secondary guide supplies identification, location and behavioral details; Future Press confirms an official enemy encyclopedia exists. Its individual pages were not accessed in this task. Patch-dependent mechanics and community interpretations remain separate from explicit game content, and no quoted game text is reproduced.
