Overview
Vipers combine a prehensile digestive organ with an abdomen storing a microbial mixture. A sudden extension can drag a victim out of an advantageous position, while discharged clouds reduce the effectiveness of nearby ground weapons. Their threatening limbs serve restraint more than ordinary combat. Fictional anatomical accounts tie tail structures to the defiler template and describe a balance of sensory organs, nutrients and bioelectric energy. None of this identifies a terrestrial snake as a literal ancestor; viper is the strain's name within the Swarm.
The 2013 multiplayer form uses Abduct, Blinding Cloud and Consume, with energy replenished from friendly zerg structures. Browder's earlier pre-beta update instead described feeding on minerals, a useful reminder that announced mechanics were still experiments. The campaign can produce a viper through a selected mutalisk evolution, whereas standard multiplayer breeds it differently. Later play adds Parasitic Bomb; Blizzard's 2017 design proposal changes how multiple bombs interact rather than changing the species into an ordinary attacker. The consistent theme is manipulation: isolating valuable enemies and creating openings for other zerg.
First appearances & development
The viper debuted as a released form in Heart of the Swarm (2013), after pre-release development accounts. Story material connects primal essence, defiler-derived elements and Kerrigan's conditional mutalisk evolution. These are selected adaptations within a fictional genetic-engineering setting, not a single natural parentage shared by every gameplay version.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard's inspected pre-beta update and indexed 2017 design announcement document changing intentions. The specialist entry transcribes release abilities and campaign branches. This account avoids presenting the abandoned mineral-feeding proposal as released behavior, and treats damage stacking, targeting restrictions and energy values as version-dependent rules rather than anatomy.
