Overview

A swollen breeding structure rises from the swarm host's back. Fictional anatomical accounts describe larvae in its acidic bloodstream that are rapidly developed into locusts when combat demands them. The host sends these creatures forward rather than attacking directly, creating a separation between the valuable parent and expendable frontline. The campaign connects Abathur's adaptation to primal hosts encountered on Zerus. Optional carrion and creeper evolutions alter offspring flight or movement through creep; these are chosen strains rather than mandatory stages in every host's life.

The gameplay history changes how the parent uses that biology. Before Heart of the Swarm's beta, Browder described a burrowed siege creature that pressured enemies at a distance. In the 2013 campaign, rooting and an optional burrow mutation have distinct rules. Blizzard's March 2015 preview then proposed mobile harassment: locust production while unburrowed, manually triggered waves and longer intervals. Flying locusts cross terrain before descending to attack. This revision retains the incubator identity while changing its tactical rhythm, so an old continuous siege description cannot stand in for all later versions.

First appearances & development

The swarm host entered the released Heart of the Swarm expansion in 2013. Earlier developer updates document its testing role, and Legacy of the Void later redesigned deployment. Primal-host ancestry belongs to the campaign's fictional evolution account; discarded developmental naming for other models does not make an infestor synonymous with this creature.

Canon & continuity

The inspected Blizzard development update and 2015 beta preview provide independent historical snapshots. Indexed specialist campaign transcriptions supply Zerus, rooting and evolution alternatives. These witnesses support a mode-sensitive account of an incubator organism, not a timeless list combining every ability from competitive, campaign and cooperative play.
