Overview

The worm's skin and ribs support an extended passage linked to a nydus network. Lore describes organs responding to movement and chemical signals, with crushing teeth, tissue growth and peristalsis serving excavation and transport. Warriors enter through the network or an emerged head and rapidly move to another opening. The worm is consequently more than an ordinary burrowing attacker: it makes secure territory vulnerable by transporting an army there. Its teeth are chiefly digging tools, and the profile does not invent a separate swallowing attack from their appearance.

Wings of Liberty gives this organism a structure-like interface: the player chooses a visible destination and unloads units through the newly emerged opening. In the March 2015 beta preview, Blizzard proposed protection during emergence to strengthen harassment. Later version references show that emergence defenses changed again, so beta invulnerability should not become a timeless biological property. Browder's earlier experiment with creep-spreading and building-attacking variants likewise records proposed designs rather than additional released species. Campaign greater worms and cooperative omega worms elaborate the transport function, with their own distances, durability and detection rules.

First appearances & development

The nydus worm is the released StarCraft II development of the earlier nydus canal concept, documented in Wings of Liberty (2010). This entry concerns the organism and its selected variants, not every building carrying the nydus name. Pre-beta experimental offensive forms are discussed as production history without being counted as new creatures.

Canon & continuity

Indexed specialist anatomy and game descriptions identify the living transport and its network relationship. The directly read Browder update records experimental variants; Blizzard's 2015 preview records emergence protection in a specified beta. These sources support historical comparison, not an assertion of present invulnerability or unlimited in-world geographic range.
