Overview
The varterral is a many-limbed, spiderlike guardian associated with ancient elven places. Witch Hunt uses one as a formidable encounter, and Dragon Age II gives the creature another role around an old elven site. Its agile movement and venomous attacks make the guardian physically dangerous, while the surrounding ruins connect it with a history that the characters only partly understand.
Dragon Age II's codex presents a Dalish tale in which Dirthamen creates a varterral from fallen trees to protect a beloved city from a dragon. That is explicitly a story told by a keeper, not a neutral demonstration that every detail occurred literally. Continued guardianship after the city's decline is central to the legend's meaning. This profile preserves that attribution and separates the mythic account from observed game encounters, without forcing the creature into the taxonomy of ordinary spiders or another franchise's constructs.
First appearances & development
Multiple treatments; selected Witch Hunt (2010) and Dragon Age II (2011). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Codex narrators can be mistaken; this entry distinguishes the selected game's knowledge from later revelations and changing combat mechanics.
