Overview
High dragons are the enormous mature female dragons described in Dragon Age's creature lore. They possess wings, powerful limbs and breath weapons, and their lairs can contain eggs, younger dragons and attending drakes. Origins makes an encounter with a high dragon part of the Urn of Sacred Ashes region, while the wider lore connects dragon sightings with Thedas's calendar and history.
Inquisition provides numerous named high-dragon hunts with different habitats and elemental attacks. Fire is therefore not a universal characteristic of every individual: some use cold or electricity. Shapeshifters, spirits and archdemons that take a dragonlike form are also distinct from ordinary animals in this life cycle. The profile follows the selected games' accounts without claiming that every codex author knows the complete biology, or treating the game's taxonomy as interchangeable with dragons from another fictional world.
First appearances & development
Multiple treatments; selected Dragon Age: Origins (2009) and Inquisition (2014). This entry follows the version represented by the primary works listed below, rather than treating the name as a single creature shared by every adaptation. Codex narrators can be mistaken; this entry distinguishes the selected game's knowledge from later revelations and changing combat mechanics.
Canon & continuity
The bibliography identifies Dragon Age: Origins as a primary basis and Dragon Age: Inquisition as a second useful treatment. The linked secondary reference supports identification and contextual claims; it does not substitute for consulting the named edition, episode or game. Codex narrators can be mistaken; this entry distinguishes the selected game's knowledge from later revelations and changing combat mechanics.
