Overview

Darkspawn are the Blight-corrupted creatures that threaten Thedas, taking several forms rather than constituting one uniform monster body. Origins places them in the Deep Roads and the invasion of Ferelden, where an archdemon directs a Blight. Their blood and corruption are dangerous beyond an individual battle, linking the enemies with a wider catastrophe and the Grey Wardens' hazardous methods.

The original game's codex preserves competing religious and dwarven accounts of their origin, which should be identified as beliefs rather than settled narration. Awakening further complicates the idea of a wholly mindless horde through the Architect and other awakened individuals. Later games reveal additional history and change creature designs. This profile describes the collective as a monstrous threat category, while keeping its component forms, unusual conscious members and later revelations distinct instead of equating every darkspawn with the same personality or origin.
