Overview

An archdemon is the great corrupted dragon entity that leads darkspawn during a Blight. Origins centers its Fifth Blight on Urthemiel and links the creature's survival with the Grey Wardens' special relationship to the corruption. Defeating the dragon is therefore a narrative problem as well as a battle, with consequences beyond simply reducing a large monster's health.

The game's Chantry-derived account describes the Old Gods as sleeping dragons sought by darkspawn, but later revelations complicate what those beings actually are and how they are connected to other powers. Awakening also supplies a particular explanation for Urthemiel's corruption through the Architect's intervention. This entry follows that early-game knowledge explicitly and does not present it as the franchise's final cosmological answer. It distinguishes archdemons from ordinary high dragons and from unrelated demons merely bearing an impressive title.
