Overview

The older v3.5 account gives sahuagin green bodies and communities with noncombatants, military leaders, priestesses and accompanying sharks. Prolonged conflict with aquatic elves can disrupt maritime travel. Rare four-armed individuals have additional attacks; malenti resemble aquatic elves when sahuagin communities occur near elven ones. These are variants within the older species account, rather than proof that sahuagin descend from elves.

Rules for shark interaction and life outside water have changed. In v3.5, their telepathy conveys simple concepts and supports training sharks; time on land depends on Constitution. The 2014 block lets them magically command nearby sharks and requires submersion every four hours. Its Blood Frenzy improves melee attacks against wounded creatures, while its ordinary assault combines a bite with claws or a spear.

The 2025 Sahuagin Warrior retains limited amphibiousness and shark control, but is a Fiend with acid and cold resistance. Its Blood Frenzy applies to attack rolls without the earlier melee-only wording; its listed routine uses two claw attacks. Aquatic Charge provides a separate swim toward a visible enemy. These are changes to an encounter model. The public block does not explain the cosmological cause of the classification change or establish that every historical sahuagin portrayal used the revised abilities.

First appearances & development

Sahuagin have appeared across multiple D&D editions as intelligent aquatic adversaries. The inspected sequence here is the v3.5 SRD, the 2014 Basic Rules and the 2025 Monster Manual warrior. Older rare variants and community descriptions are kept with their original rules context, while the revised classification is identified explicitly.

Canon & continuity

Complete public legacy and revised official blocks establish the comparison of attacks, water dependence and shark telepathy. A licensed reproduction of the older SRD supplies social organization and malenti details. Forum explanations of the revised creature type are excluded because they are not publisher testimony.
