Overview

The v3.5 account gives lizardfolk green, grey or brown scales and long tails used for balance. Their marsh communities include noncombatants and leaders, rather than comprising only the armed patrol an adventuring party might encounter. Draconic is their usual language; the separate character rules also provide Common. Although the combat description favours a forceful rush toward water, an outnumbered group may set traps, ambush intruders or attack supplies. More developed tribes can employ more elaborate tactics.

The 2014 Basic Rules instead emphasize jungle and swamp territory and practical survival. Their representative lizardfolk can swim and hold its breath for fifteen minutes, and can combine different melee weapons, including a bite, club or spiked shield. That fixed breath duration differs from the older Constitution-based procedure. Neither block supplies an entire culture or biography for every individual. Volo’s Guide also offered a playable lizardfolk option; the publisher’s errata removes its Alignment trait, making the distinction between a monster’s printed encounter profile and a player character particularly important.

First appearances & development

Lizardfolk belong to the game’s long-running repertoire of reptilian peoples. This account compares the v3.5 System Reference Document with the 2014 Basic Rules and a later correction to Volo’s Guide to Monsters. It does not merge those rules into a single timeless anatomy or claim an independently established earliest publication.

Canon & continuity

The official legacy block supplies the 2014 weapons, language and breath duration. The older SRD reproduction supplies community organization, coloration and tactics. Publisher errata explicitly removes the playable option’s Alignment trait; it is evidence for that correction, rather than a newly read complete cultural chapter.
