Overview
The roach's stocky body and protective carapace suit it to absorb punishment in front of more fragile attackers. It projects corrosive saliva at ground targets, but its ordinary attack does not defend against aircraft. Lore traces its template to Zantar slugs from Garrxax, whose acidity and regeneration the Swarm adapted into a military creature. Burrowing and the appropriate tunneling upgrade let it conceal, recover or reposition; these mechanical conditions matter more than the simplified claim that all roaches can always move underground.
Heart of the Swarm lets Kerrigan choose a vile strain that weakens victims or a corpser strain that produces roachlings from killed hosts. Both remain conditional adaptations. Legacy of the Void adds the ravager morph, exchanging the compact fighter for an artillery form. Development histories also record temporary changes to underground movement and regeneration during testing. A discarded beta rule is useful evidence of design revision, but it is a poor basis for a universal ability. In battle, a roach is therefore best understood as durable mobile ground support whose exact tricks depend on campaign, upgrades and edition.
First appearances & development
The released roach appeared in Wings of Liberty (2010), after earlier StarCraft II development showcases. Later games retained the core strain while adding campaign evolutions and the ravager transformation. Its relation to a slug is fictional assimilation history; the creature is not presented here as an ordinary animal bearing the same name.
Canon & continuity
Indexed StarCraft Wiki articles separately document lore, campaign transcriptions and development history. Blizzard's official Acid Burns announcement verifies a further licensed roach-centered story, not a newly inspected full text. The bibliography identifies the two games that establish the baseline fighter and Kerrigan's selected evolutionary variants.
