Overview
A baneling develops through a short chrysalis phase: limbs diminish while bulging chemical sacs replace the zergling's lean fighting body. Its final attack destroys its own body and showers nearby ground targets with corrosive material. Fictional accounts connect the strain's emergence to acidic mold on Sorona and the destruction of Cask. These are in-world assimilation events, rather than an assertion that the real game creature descended from a terrestrial insect. Burrowing permits concealed ambushes, while its familiar rolling movement is associated with the relevant speed upgrade in the game.
Blizzard's retrospective gives a different kind of lineage: designers wanted to preserve the original infested terran's explosive battlefield role while making a useful early-game unit. Fitch and Kim explain why the old unit's elaborate production requirements frustrated this goal; Browder describes years of work on the smaller explosive creature. The result rewards interception, spacing and deliberate control rather than merely comparing health totals. Heart of the Swarm adds campaign-specific hunter and splitter evolutions, as well as an optional healing acid mutation. Those choices do not mean every competitive baneling jumps, divides or heals friendly organisms.
First appearances & development
The released baneling entered StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty in 2010, following pre-release previews and a 2010 licensed-fiction treatment of Cask. Heart of the Swarm (2013) elaborated selected evolution branches. This profile groups those variants while distinguishing their campaign availability from the standard multiplayer form.
Canon & continuity
Indexed creature-reference material supplies the Sorona history and transcribed evolution choices. The directly read Blizzard anniversary article supplies firsthand design testimony, including the infested-terran comparison. Liquipedia's edition-specific guide independently identifies zergling morphing, rolling upgrades and the explosive battlefield function; no fresh complete playthrough or short-story reading is claimed.
Selected bibliography
Documented works and useful reading. This is not a list of every appearance.

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Introduces the released multiplayer baneling and its zergling morph.
- 02
StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
Campaign evolution missions distinguish hunter and splitter strains; mutation selection is conditional.
Family, evolution & connections
Infested Terran gameplay role
Browder and Kim explain that the Baneling reworked the original Infested Terran’s explosive role into an earlier, easier-to-produce unit. This is gameplay-design history, not biological evolution.
