Overview

The selected narrative identifies Orddu as the daughter of the witch Orwen, dwelling at Pen Nant Govid on the confines of Hell. Earlier, Ysbaddaden demands her blood warm to prepare his hair for shaving and specifies Gwyddolwyd Gorr’s heat-preserving bottles to carry it. Gwyn ab Nudd and Gwythyr advise Arthur to send Kacmwri and his brother Hygwyd against her. Orddu seizes Hygwyd by his hair and throws him down, then recovers after Kacmwri pulls her away and drives both attackers out with blows.

A second pair, Hiramreu and Hireidil, fares worse. All four men are left unable to move and must be carried away on Arthur’s mare Llamrei. Arthur finally reaches the cave entrance and kills the witch with his dagger Carnwennan; Kaw keeps her blood for the quest. The episode’s extraordinary force and resistance explain her place among the final marvels, yet it supplies no species-wide witch anatomy or detailed transformation. Her explicitly named mother is a genuine textual family relationship, unlike inferred genealogies for the quest’s associated animals. The profile retains her violent confrontation as narrative evidence without turning a historically accused woman or an actual community into this literary monster.

Origins & earliest records

Orddu’s named encounter appears near the conclusion of Culhwch and Olwen in Guest’s translation, first published 1838–1849, from medieval Welsh transmission. The selected electronic text supplies the mother’s name and cave episode; no independent historical identity or oral starting date is established.

Records & interpretation

The witch’s strength, named relationship and defeat are literary attestations. The retained blood exists within the story, without a surviving sample or biological classification. The narrative does not justify identifying real people as witches or adopting its adversarial category as ethnography.
