Overview
Ysbaddaden declares that Twrch Trwyth cannot be hunted without Drudwyn, the whelp associated with Greid son of Eri. His task list requires the leash of Cwrs Cant Ewin, the collar of Canhastyr Canllaw and a chain fastening them. It also specifies Mabon son of Modron as the only suitable huntsman, although Mabon’s whereabouts have been unknown since his abduction as a baby. This makes the hound a junction between the boar hunt and the search among the oldest animals.
Later, Kai describes a restraint made from Dillus Varvawc’s beard as the only one capable of holding Drudwyn, while the earlier task list associates that beard requirement with two other whelps. The selected translation preserves this tension; the profile does not erase it by making all the dogs identical. Drudwyn appears with Mabon during Ysgithyrwyn’s hunt and is subsequently led by Eli and Trachmyr when the hunters pursue Twrch through Wales. No coat colour, breed or physical dimensions are given. Its profile rests on extraordinary restraint and narrative role, not an invented modern dog classification or a claim that Greid is its biological parent.
Origins & earliest records
The hound is named in the medieval Culhwch and Olwen narrative and in Guest’s nineteenth-century translation. The selected electronic edition does not identify a securely dated print witness. Its designation as Greid’s whelp indicates association or possession here; it does not establish a genealogy.
Records & interpretation
The specialised equipment claims and named appearances are textual evidence for an extraordinary quest hound. They are not measured canine traits. Differences between the task catalogue and subsequent episode remain an editorial issue rather than being concealed as a uniform animal description.
