Overview
The Warcraft III ghoul is a rotting combatant whose condition follows an earlier zombie stage in the unit guide's account. Hunger is functional as well as horrific: researched Cannibalize recovers health by consuming a fallen organic body, including one transported in a Meat Wagon. This takes time, so corpse feeding is not instantaneous regeneration during every blow. The same unit gathers lumber, making it both a soldier and a worker in the Scourge economy. Ghoul Frenzy changes movement and attack rate after research, rather than describing a separate naturally evolved breed.
The later death knight presentation changes the monster's relationship to the player. Blizzard's Legion preview describes an unholy knight's ghoul as an active minion: Death Coil restores its energy, while Dark Transformation temporarily changes its body and abilities into a stronger undead form. The selected preview gives that transformation a twenty-second duration. January 2026 pre-expansion notes instead describe a twelve-second transformation extendable through named spells, alongside an updated Infected Claws disease effect. The comparison demonstrates why a familiar ability name must be tied to a version. A summoned or temporarily transformed ghoul is not automatically identical to the Warcraft III worker, nor does serving a player character erase its undead condition.
First appearances & development
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos establishes the selected Scourge unit in 2002, retained by the 2003 expansion. This account then compares the publisher's Legion-era minion preview with a January 2026 update. These sources document different implementations of a recurring undead type, without assigning every game enemy one universal life cycle.
Canon & continuity
The complete original unit guide supports the zombie transition, lumber work, corpse use and research distinction. The full indexed Legion class preview and actual 2026 update passages establish the changing minion transformation. Their dates and contexts are kept visible; ordinary folklore ghouls and unrelated tabletop abilities are not imported.
