Overview

Warcraft gargoyles are voracious flying creatures with wiry bodies and protective crystalline hides. The classic guide locates them in Northrend and associates their movement south with the Lich King's armies. Their stone-like appearance is therefore not simply an ornamental carving that becomes animated whenever a building needs a guardian.

A resting stone form thickens their protection and allows recovery, while leaving them unable to continue attacking. That tradeoff connects the sculptural resemblance with a specific state of the creature's body. It should not be expanded into an assertion that every gargoyle statue in Warcraft is secretly alive. This profile follows the original game creature and distinguishes its rules from both architectural gargoyles and unrelated fictional species with the same name.

First appearances & development

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002) includes Northrend gargoyles among the Scourge's creatures. This profile uses the classic strategy-game treatment and Blizzard's surviving unit guide. The named 2003 expansion is a second playable treatment of the same type, not evidence of a new species. Later MMO and Reforged systems can change presentation and mechanics.

Canon & continuity

Blizzard's exact gargoyle unit page supplies the crystalline body and recovery state. The description separates its creature account from balance numbers and player advice. No exhaustive later retcon survey, creator-inspiration claim or universal current-game mechanic is supplied.
