Overview

The flying mounts of the Nazgûl are enormous, featherless creatures with long necks, beaks and broad membranous wings. They are often called fell beasts, although that descriptive phrase is not a precise scientific species name in the story. Their riders and the animals should be distinguished: the Nazgûl are Ringwraiths, while the mounts supply flight and a bodily presence that can be attacked. Their breeding history is suggestive rather than completely explained.

These creatures change the tactical reach of Sauron's servants, carrying surveillance and terror above armies and travellers. The Witch-king's mount at the Pelennor Fields is a particular animal in a particular battle, not a dragon merely because it is large and winged. Films emphasize aerial attacks and provide a fixed visual design. The selected bibliography instead follows the novels' descriptions and events, leaving later screen anatomy and game behaviour separately scoped.

First appearances & development

This profile uses 1954 and 1955 novel as its selected publication context. The bibliography identifies particular published narratives, poems, manuscript histories or an explicitly named adaptation. Publication dates describe those works, not a claim that all the underlying texts were composed then. Posthumous editorial syntheses and earlier draft versions are kept distinct from Tolkien's lifetime novels.

Canon & continuity

Tolkien Gateway is an independent, citation-bearing reference rather than an official publisher source. Its named textual references support the bounded identification and scene comparison here. Public article and MediaWiki API reads were used for the creature accounts. The bibliography directs readers to the primary works; no complete reread of every cited volume or manuscript is claimed.
