Overview
The Nazgûl are nine former mortal Men transformed through their Rings of Power and bound to Sauron. They are a particular wraith collective, not a naturally reproducing race or a name for their flying mounts. Their black robes give visible shape to otherwise unseen bodies, while their presence brings terror and pursuit into apparently ordinary roads and settlements. The Witch-king is their leader, with an individual history that extends beyond the group's immediate hunt.
The Fellowship of the Ring first makes them relentless pursuers of the Ring-bearer, and The Return of the King places them in overt command and aerial warfare. Those phases distinguish covert searching from battlefield terror without changing the nine into a new species. This entry receives creature priority because it covers an undead monstrous condition and its defined collective, rather than padding the catalogue with nine separate human character biographies. The selected books remain separate from later game backstories assigned to individual riders.
First appearances & development
This profile uses 1954 and 1955 novel as its selected publication context. The bibliography identifies particular published narratives, poems, manuscript histories or an explicitly named adaptation. Publication dates describe those works, not a claim that all the underlying texts were composed then. Posthumous editorial syntheses and earlier draft versions are kept distinct from Tolkien's lifetime novels.
Canon & continuity
Tolkien Gateway is an independent, citation-bearing reference rather than an official publisher source. Its named textual references support the bounded identification and scene comparison here. Public article and MediaWiki API reads were used for the creature accounts. The bibliography directs readers to the primary works; no complete reread of every cited volume or manuscript is claimed.
