Overview

The Great Eagles are enormous, intelligent birds whose ability to speak and choose allies makes them more than transport animals. They aid protagonists in several periods of Middle-earth's history, with Thorondor prominent in First Age accounts and Gwaihir among the later named birds. Their association with Manwë gives them a place in the legendarium's wider spiritual order, although the precise nature of all Eagles is a subject with changing manuscript treatments.

The Hobbit shows them rescuing Thorin's company and joining the Battle of Five Armies, while The Return of the King includes their intervention at the Black Gate and rescue from Mount Doom. Those actions occur at particular moments and do not establish unlimited availability or obedience to any traveller. This entry groups the intelligent giant birds without turning every named Eagle into a duplicate species profile or resolving disputed origins as settled zoology.

First appearances & development

This profile uses 1937 novel and later published legendarium as its selected publication context. The bibliography identifies particular published narratives, poems, manuscript histories or an explicitly named adaptation. Publication dates describe those works, not a claim that all the underlying texts were composed then. Posthumous editorial syntheses and earlier draft versions are kept distinct from Tolkien's lifetime novels.

Canon & continuity

Tolkien Gateway is an independent, citation-bearing reference rather than an official publisher source. Its named textual references support the bounded identification and scene comparison here. Public article and MediaWiki API reads were used for the creature accounts. The bibliography directs readers to the primary works; no complete reread of every cited volume or manuscript is claimed.
