Overview
Deathbirds appear as enormous, decayed birds carrying traces of corpses in their bodies. The Twinbird Kite Shield says their mother is an envoy of an outer god; the phrasing presents a tradition, not a newly observed breeding event or identification of that god. Explosive Ghostflame supplies a different historical claim: before the Erdtree existed, death was burned in ghostflame and the birds kept that fire. Their role is consequently tied to an older death rite, rather than merely to being ordinary carrion birds enlarged for a boss fight.
Ordinary Deathbirds appear at night in selected overworld locations, while Death Rite Birds add a more elaborate ritual presentation. The Death Ritual Spear describes ancient priests admitted among the birds who became guardians through the rite of Death and pledged themselves to a distant resurrection. Those guardians are not equated with the shield's maternal figure. The selected Mountaintops spear encounter is an exception to the usual night-only pattern. Holy and anti-undead attacks have particular combat value, but regional rewards and encounter schedules do not establish a universal physical diet, a complete divine hierarchy or an ordinary avian species lifecycle.
First appearances & development
The selected bird forms and funerary equipment belong to Elden Ring in 2022. Deathbirds and their Death Rite presentation remain grouped, with relevant encounter exceptions. Their place in the world's earlier rites is distinct from the real-world raven or phoenix traditions and from similarly named birds in other franchises.
Canon & continuity
The creature overview and actual Twinbird shield, Explosive Ghostflame and ritual spear transcriptions were read. The former supplies a qualified mother claim, while the latter two supply fire-keeping and priestly guardianship. Their differing statements are preserved without assigning unrecorded parents, confirming a god's name or merging every death-related creature.
