Overview

Runebears are enormous bears that make the Lands Between's familiar animal life unexpectedly dangerous. Their heavy bodies carry distinctive markings on the chest, and their attacks combine broad claw sweeps with surprisingly fast forward movement. A creature that first appears to be ordinary wilderness scenery can therefore dominate the space around it, especially when encountered among trees.

The base game places them in several regions and includes a cave boss using the same broad design. Regional encounters have different rewards and difficulty, so one instance's statistics cannot stand for all Runebears. Community theories connect them to dragons, often using network-test material, but that proposed ancestry is not asserted here. Great red bears added in Shadow of the Erdtree are a later treatment rather than evidence that all original Runebears share their features.
