Overview
Crypt fiends are mummified, arachnid-bodied Scourge creatures connected in the original guide to the conquered kingdom of Azjol-Nerub. Their spindly lower limbs and bandaged torso make their appearance markedly different from humanoid undead. The guide's comparison with a human-spider cross describes what they seem like, rather than establishing a scientifically verified hybrid origin.
Webbing gives these ground units a particular tactical role: they can force airborne enemies down so that other troops can attack them. The expansion-era guide also includes burrowing, which changes their visibility and recovery at the cost of active attacks. Those mechanics are version-specific. Nerubian heritage and former political power remain explicit; this profile concerns the Scourge's transformed creature type rather than replacing a complete account of living nerubian people.
First appearances & development
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002) presents crypt fiends; The Frozen Throne (2003) retains and develops their unit role. This profile uses the classic strategy-game treatment and Blizzard's surviving unit guide. The named 2003 expansion is a second playable treatment of the same type, not evidence of a new species. Later MMO and Reforged systems can change presentation and mechanics.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard's exact crypt fiend unit page supplies the appearance, Nerubian connection and web/burrow roles. The description separates its creature account from balance numbers and player advice. No exhaustive later retcon survey, creator-inspiration claim or universal current-game mechanic is supplied.
