Overview
Carrion beetles are insect minions associated with the Crypt Lord's summoning in The Frozen Throne. Their prominent mandibles suit attacks against ground opponents, while stronger summoned forms gain the ability to burrow. Going underground exchanges active combat for concealment and observation, allowing a creature initially raised for fighting to serve a scouting purpose.
The classic guide distinguishes them from many timed summons: they persist until killed, and their summoner's death does not immediately erase them. This is a particular rules distinction, not proof of an unlimited biological lifespan. Different skill-generated strengths belong to one creature profile rather than becoming separate species. Real carrion beetles are independent zoological subjects and do not provide automatic evidence for these magically summoned minions.
First appearances & development
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003) introduces carrion beetles associated with the Crypt Lord. This profile uses the classic strategy-game treatment and Blizzard's surviving unit guide. The named 2003 expansion is the selected introduction; the second bibliography item is an undated official guide. Later MMO and Reforged systems can change presentation and mechanics.
Canon & continuity
Blizzard's exact carrion beetle unit page supplies the summoning, mandibles, burrowing and persistence. The description separates its creature account from balance numbers and player advice. No exhaustive later retcon survey, creator-inspiration claim or universal current-game mechanic is supplied.
