Overview
The brood lord's broad, manta-like form carries sacs that generate broodlings, turning reproduction into an attack. A launched creature strikes the target and continues fighting on the ground for its limited game lifespan. The parent therefore pressures defenses without descending into melee itself. Like the earlier guardian, it attacks ground forces but cannot rely on that weapon to protect itself from fighters. This makes aerial escort and positioning part of its identity, rather than treating the largest-looking flyer as automatically dominant over every opponent.
Standard Wings of Liberty multiplayer morphs the creature from a corruptor, and fictional anatomy derives its breeding sacs and balancing tail from that template. Heart of the Swarm's campaign offers a different route: Kerrigan can select a mutalisk evolution after recovering a brood-lord strain. That branch does not erase the competitive corruptor morph. Blizzard's 2019 balance proposal adjusts broodling leash range, showing that the reach of the offspring is a designed interaction, not an immutable zoological measurement. Cosmetic skins and developmental names likewise should not be mistaken for additional unconnected species.
First appearances & development
The released brood lord appeared in Wings of Liberty (2010), replacing the guardian's aerial siege role in that roster. Earlier development iterations had other names and parent-morph proposals. The 2013 campaign's selected mutalisk evolution is included as an explicit alternate treatment rather than a universally mandatory life cycle.
Canon & continuity
The indexed specialist account supplies morphology, thrown offspring and the campaign branch, with game citations. Blizzard's October 2019 balance article independently witnesses the parent-offspring leash mechanic as a changing rule. Source works are identified by mode; no new claim of reading every collections description or testing contemporary balance is made.
