Overview

The Bell Gargoyles guard the first Bell of Awakening above the Undead Parish church. One initially fights with a halberd and shield; when it has lost sufficient health, a second joins the rooftop battle. The newcomers' fire breath and the first guardian's weapon attacks divide the player's attention across a narrow, sloping space. Both can breathe fire after the encounter changes phase, so the distinction is a combat emphasis rather than two entirely different species. Flying descents, shield blows and tail attacks also keep the battle from being merely an exchange of stationary strikes.

Their equipment gives the guardians a material identity beyond the general fantasy label. A severed tail becomes a bronze battle axe and bends during heavy attacks, an unusual reminder that its flexibility survives its use as a weapon. Similar gargoyles patrol Anor Londo, but their location and rewards should not be confused with the church boss's progress gate. Steamforged's 2023 licensed preview describes stone creatures and emphasizes their strength and melee threat in The Tome of Strange Beings. That tabletop witness preserves the recognizable monster while introducing its own roleplaying statistics; it does not establish that all gargoyles in mythology or other fictional worlds share these behaviours.

First appearances & development

The selected guardians appear in Dark Souls in 2011. Their later appearance in a licensed 2023 roleplaying bestiary is distinguished from the original rooftop encounter. Anor Londo examples are covered as related game forms, while traditional architectural gargoyles and franchise-specific creatures elsewhere retain separate entries.

Canon & continuity

The specialist encounter body was read for the paired fight, arena and fire-versus-weapon emphasis. The linked tail-axe item transcription supplies its bronze material and bending property. Steamforged's actual Bell Gargoyle preview was inspected, but no unseen image statistics or complete printed bestiary chapter are claimed.
