Overview
The Asylum Demon guards the Undead Asylum, where the game's opening prisoner is confined. Its bulk and enormous hammer make the first courtyard confrontation look overwhelming, especially before proper equipment is recovered. The initial route permits escape through a side opening; returning above the courtyard later creates an opportunity for a plunging attack. This structure gives the monster a teaching role: retreat and a better approach are part of survival, rather than evidence that every obstacle must be overcome immediately.
Its heavy swings can break the courtyard's pillars, and it can rise before dropping its weight onto the ground. The Demon's Great Hammer description connects the weapon to stone archtrees and lesser demons, while expressly denying an inherent special power. Defeating the boss during the first confrontation has a particular weapon-reward condition; that is a gameplay distinction, not a reproductive or social trait. Steamforged's licensed miniature treatment preserves the asylum-guard and hammer identity for the tabletop. It does not make the original game encounter's route, statistics or reward rules automatically applicable to a roleplaying campaign.
First appearances & development
The selected creature is the opening boss of FromSoftware's Dark Souls in 2011. Its game role and later licensed tabletop representation are identified separately. The asylum guard is not merged with similarly shaped demons elsewhere in the game merely because they share an outline or weapon category.
Canon & continuity
The inspected specialist encounter account documents the initial escape route, return attack and reward condition. A separate item-text transcription supplies the hammer's material and lack of intrinsic magical power. Steamforged's licensed 2022 miniature article independently confirms the prison setting and weapon, but does not supply a fresh complete game replay or board-game rulebook.
