Overview

Banshees are Reaper-converted asari whose elongated bodies, cries and powerful biotics make them conspicuous battlefield threats. Their movement can close distance abruptly, while ranged attacks and close contact make simply holding a firing position unsafe. The codex connects the conversion to active or latent Ardat-Yakshi traits. It does not say that every asari is destined to become a Banshee or that every victim had previously lived with a diagnosed condition.

Despite the folklore-derived name, this is a physical converted organism within Mass Effect's science-fiction setting. Its shrieks are described as psychologically disturbing rather than possessing a demonstrated independent physiological effect. Biotic attacks should therefore be distinguished from a claim that sound alone kills everyone who hears it. Encounters such as the asari monastery mission expose the personal and institutional consequences of the conversion. The entry follows the 2012 game's enemy and codex rather than importing the omens, supernatural ancestry or death-announcement role of traditional banshee stories.

First appearances & development

Banshees are the transformed asari enemy represented in Mass Effect 3 and its 2012 codex. The name's older folklore history does not supply their anatomy or powers. Active and latent Ardat-Yakshi predispositions are both included in the source explanation, preventing a narrower claim that only a previously diagnosed monastery resident can be converted.

Canon & continuity

The 2012 codex explains the asari predisposition used in conversion and separates alarming vocalization from demonstrated physiological harm. The creature reference records its combat implementation and monastery encounter. These sources support a physical Reaper-made organism rather than the powers of a folklore spirit, while genetic observations remain fictional game-world explanations.
