Overview

Bakgatla ba Kgafela in Botswana’s Kgatleng District maintain regional cultural identities through music, community gatherings and shared public spaces. UNESCO’s account of Dikopelo locates the choral practice specifically within this community. It describes men, women and children participating in singing and patterned movement without instrumental accompaniment, with experienced elders passing skills to younger participants. The account also describes a shift from agricultural settings to villages and pressures on transmission. Its 2017 Urgent Safeguarding List inscription concerns a particular cultural practice; it is neither an origin date for Bakgatla nor a claim that every member performs it.

Rhosaliah Moseki’s April 2022 BOPA report records a Madikwe Cultural Festival held in Mabalane. Daniel Molokwe explained its purpose as introducing Bakgatla culture to other communities, while organiser Anthony Rasetshwane described lessons from the first event and intentions for future editions. The programme included music and opportunities for clothing designers and makers to present their work, with Boshetete, Dr Vom and Ditiro Leero among the named performers. Mabuse Pule and Kolobetso Sejakgomo connected the gathering with community pride and potential business opportunities. These economic expectations remain attributed views rather than measured benefits.

A September 2026 report by Mmoniemang Motsamai describes preparations for Koma 48 and related community events. Coordinator Odirile Molwantwa connected Dikopelo with identity, inclusion and messages about daily social life. The planned choir programme brought local performers together with participants from other districts, offering younger people an opportunity to encounter the music. Ministry representative Monica Selelo discussed local artists and community participation. A pottery exhibition at Phuthadikobo Museum was also among the announced activities. This dated account documents a proposed celebratory calendar; it does not independently confirm that every advertised event subsequently occurred.

Motsamai’s May 2024 interview with Lesedi Seitei offers a separate account of the Mochudi kgotla shelter. Seitei credited community donations, collaborators and a construction committee with supporting the project over several years. Architect Christian Phaladze and engineers Disang Matlhaga and Carthage Matlhaga were named contributors. The planned opening included music and poetry, while an invited speaker from Bakgatla ba Mosetlha in South Africa demonstrates contact with a separately named community. This account places cultural gatherings within a collectively supported built setting without merging the distinct Bakgatla identities or treating an anticipated opening as current facility status.
