Overview
Vampires in Tolkien's First Age stories are mysterious, bat-shaped beings rather than a fully described population of undead human aristocrats. Thuringwethil serves as Sauron's messenger, and Sauron himself can adopt a vampire form. Those two examples establish a shape and a narrative association, but do not establish that their deeper nature or means of becoming such a creature are identical. The surviving account supplies relatively little species ecology.
The Beren and Lúthien narratives use Thuringwethil's appearance in a disguise and give Sauron's flight a monstrous airborne form. Prose and verse treatments provide the meaningful bibliography here. Later role-playing games and The Lord of the Rings Online elaborate batlike enemies, but their invented classifications cannot be backdated into Tolkien's text. This profile therefore preserves the limited evidence and does not add coffin habits, sunlight vulnerability or a human-biting reproductive mechanism borrowed from other traditions.
First appearances & development
This profile uses 1977 edited narrative and 1985 verse-history as its selected publication context. The bibliography identifies particular published narratives, poems, manuscript histories or an explicitly named adaptation. Publication dates describe those works, not a claim that all the underlying texts were composed then. Posthumous editorial syntheses and earlier draft versions are kept distinct from Tolkien's lifetime novels.
Canon & continuity
Tolkien Gateway is an independent, citation-bearing reference rather than an official publisher source. Its named textual references support the bounded identification and scene comparison here. Public article and MediaWiki API reads were used for the creature accounts. The bibliography directs readers to the primary works; no complete reread of every cited volume or manuscript is claimed.
