Overview

Torrent resembles a horse with a pale mane and two short horns, but his spectral nature changes both travel and combat. He accompanies Melina when the unconscious Tarnished is found, and Melina later gives the player the Spectral Steed Whistle, explaining that Torrent has chosen them. Summoning this companion makes long distances and dangerous open ground manageable. A second jump in the air can alter direction, while spiritsprings enable exceptional ascents and safe landings in their vicinity. The extra jump is not blanket protection against a fatal fall; a sufficiently high descent can still kill rider and mount. Riding and summoning also remain subject to location and encounter restrictions.

The mounted fighter can attack, cast or shoot while moving, with weapon handling affected by the hand used for the reins. Bandai Namco's 2024 feature highlights a dragging strike followed by an upward swing and the mount's role in reaching otherwise inaccessible terrain. Rowa, Sweet and Frozen Raisins restore Torrent's health, and a Crimson Tears flask charge can revive him after he is killed. Dialogue establishes an earlier master who entrusted the Spirit Calling Bell to Ranni, but does not identify that person. A Frenzied Flame ending depicts the whistle disintegrating even though riding remains available in play; the scene and continuing game function should not be treated as a resolved biological account of his fate. The publisher's expansion preview places the same companion alongside the journey into the Shadow Realm, rather than naming a new mount species.

First appearances & development

Torrent's selected debut is Elden Ring in 2022. The June 2024 publisher feature celebrates the existing companion before Shadow of the Erdtree, while the original dialogue and item descriptions establish his choice of rider and practical needs. Earlier-master speculation remains separate from what those named witnesses actually say.

Canon & continuity

Bandai Namco's complete feature was inspected and is correctly labelled Official. The specialist Torrent body and its dialogue/item references were also read for acquisition, jumping, healing and the ending distinction. Future Press's older bibliography remains a scope reference: no individual page or complete guidebook was newly accessed.

Torrent is a fictional steed in the 2022 action role-playing game and soulslike Elden Ring developed by FromSoftware. A ghostly being known as a "spectral steed", Torrent chooses the player character as his new owner. He subsequently assists the player in their quest to become Elden Lord, the restorer of a magical artifact called the Elden Ring, by letting them more easily traverse the game's world, the Lands Between. The first rideable animal, or "mount", in the Soulsborne series, he can be summoned and sent away using a special gold whistle bequeathed to the player early on in the game by the character Melina.

Despite being called a horse, Torrent possesses numerous goat-like traits, such as horns. He has the ability to double-jump, stand on narrow ledges, and scale tall cliffs through the use of magical "spiritsprings" scattered throughout the game world. The player may also heal Torrent using food created from Rowa, a fictional fruit. Used for the majority of the game, Torrent's appearance cannot be changed in the base version of the game, though new selectable skins called Spectral Steed Regalia were added in the game's Tarnished Edition. Torrent has been praised by various critics as one of the best video game mounts due to his immediate summoning and responsive controls while on horseback, enabling significant freedom of movement. Players' reliance on Torrent was also noted as creating a significant emotional attachment to the character.
