Overview

A torm has a large cat-like shape covered in copper or bronze scales, with three eyes and six-clawed feet. The creature reference describes substantial intelligence and strong performance in certain tests, without making it a human-speaking people. Its rider relationship is selective: it rejects handlers until accepting one person, and replacement after that person's death may take a long time. This explains why a trained mount is valuable beyond its sheer running speed.

The torm is suited to scouting more than prolonged combat. A fighting frenzy can make it attack nearby people other than its rider, and corlm within reach provoke an immediate attack. Keeping those military animals together therefore requires care. The novels show mounted soldiers at Falme and patrols in Altara; later circus animals react badly when torm pass. Its appetite and live-bearing reproduction also distinguish it from several egg-laying Seanchan exotics. Some soldiers' distrust of its intelligence is a human judgment within the story, not proof that every torm plots against its rider.

First appearances & development

The Great Hunt (1990) supplies the Falme mounted sightings. The 1997 guide and 2015 Companion expand animal background, accessed here through indexed references. Torm are one distinct creature profile; rider-selected individuals, immature animals and frenzy states are not inflated into separate species or named monster variants.

Canon & continuity

Encyclopaedia WoT indexes scouts, the mounted company and circus reaction by novel chapter. The public Torm revision identifies guide and Companion material for intelligence and behavior. Precise comparative IQ is not assigned as a real measurement, and the official Companion introduction warns that author notes and final novels can differ.
