Overview
A lopar resembles a heavy bear without fur or a projecting muzzle. Its reddish-brown skin, wide toothed mouth and clawed forepaws make it an imposing guard animal. The creature can stand roughly ten feet tall when reared, but its appearance should not be translated into one universal posture or an ordinary bear's full ecology. Reference accounts distinguish a short, powerful sprint from poorer endurance, helping explain why its strength has specific uses.
The novels allow more than a battlefield role. Cerandin compares lopar with other war animals, while Suroth keeps the named Almandaragal as a companion she has had since childhood. The public animal account describes usually placid behavior until a handler's command or agitation produces fierce fighting. Mating dominance contests can themselves be dangerous, requiring human supervision. These details make handling, familiarity and circumstance relevant; a pet's presence is not proof that an unfamiliar lopar can safely be treated as domesticated livestock without training.
First appearances & development
The Fires of Heaven (1993), chapter 47, supplies a named comparison as a war animal. A Crown of Swords and Knife of Dreams give Suroth's pet a particular household context. The profile keeps these appearances together and does not count Almandaragal as a separate taxon simply because one individual is named.
Canon & continuity
Encyclopaedia WoT identifies Cerandin's comparison and Suroth's appearances by chapter. The public Lopar revision supplies anatomy, endurance and behavior. These are reference-mediated readings of the primary novels and world background; no newly completed full-book study or unsupported origin in a particular real bear species is claimed.
