Overview

S'redit have gray wrinkled skin, large ears, long trunks and adult tusks. They are recognizable elephants within the fictional setting, not a new supernatural species. Their unfamiliarity to many Westlanders allows Valan Luca to market them as boar-horses and make extravagant claims about their origin. That showman's label describes presentation to an audience; it does not alter their anatomy.

Cerandin's care for Mer, Sanit and their calf Nerin gives The Fires of Heaven a particular family and handler relationship. She has experience in the Seanchan imperial household and prefers properly handled s'redit for battle to some of the more overtly monstrous alternatives. They also carry heavy loads, and Mer's damage to an inn shows how a circus presence can become a practical local problem. The animals are one profile for this named literary usage, not three additional taxa for bull, cow and calf or a licence to replace the compendium's factual elephant accounts.

First appearances & development

The Great Hunt (1990) names s'redit among Seanchan forces at Falme; The Fires of Heaven (1993) develops the circus family. Later transport accounts retain their utility. Fictional names and regional knowledge are the profile's subject; the elephant's real evolutionary or cultural history belongs to the real-animal corpus.

02

Canon & continuity

Encyclopaedia WoT's Elephants page and the public S'redit revision locate Falme, Cerandin and the circus chapters. Luca's Shara claim remains a showman's assertion. Speculation about ancient skeletons or the Westlands ivory trade is excluded because it cannot establish a second hidden s'redit population from the inspected creature accounts.
