Grolm

Overview

A grolm combines a squat, frog-like outline with a sharp beak and three eyes. It is a dangerous hunter rather than a small amphibian enlarged for comic effect. In The Great Hunt, Rand encounters them while trapped with Loial and Hurin in a mirror world. Killing the immediate attackers does not end the danger as more appear, and the party's escape through a Portal Stone gives the unfamiliar ecosystem a direct role in their journey.

Later sightings at Falme connect the same recognizable animals with Seanchan handlers, guards and armies. Rand and Hurin recognize grolm outside High Lord Turak's house, while Domon sees them as an unsettling sign of the invaders' unfamiliar resources. The authorized world guide, as indexed by the creature reference, explains that exotic animals had been brought through Portal Stones. A grolm's frightening appearance thus does not identify it as Shadowspawn. Its guard and battle roles belong to human domestication, while the mirror-world encounter also shows the creature beyond that controlled use.

First appearances & development

The Great Hunt (1990) supplies the mirror-world encounters in chapters 16–17 and the later Falme sightings. The 1997 world guide develops Seanchan animal background. This account identifies those works rather than inventing a separate species for wild, guarded and ridden grolm, or assigning modern evolutionary ancestry from their frog-like silhouette.

Canon & continuity

Two inspected references connect physical appearance with exact novel chapters and the authorized guide. The original novels and guide are the primary bibliography, but their complete texts have not been newly read. Claims that the mirror world's ecosystem has one certain cause are excluded when they rest on explanatory fan inference.
