Overview

A corlm resembles a wingless bird but is covered in fur rather than ordinary plumage. A long, hooked beak, head crests that function as ears and powerful hind feet give it a distinctive predatory form. Small forearms remain close to the body and help with feeding and nest work. Its tracking draws on smell and hearing, making it useful when an enemy is not simply visible along an open road.

The Seanchan use handlers, called morat'corlm, to direct these animals with spoken commands and whistles. The world-guide account indexed by the public reference describes a generally solitary temperament outside mating and slow replacement through single eggs that do not all hatch. That cost matters beside its efficiency in pursuit. The Great Hunt shows leashed corlm with mounted soldiers, and Winter's Heart again distinguishes them among the empire's transported animals. Its lack of flight and dedicated tracking role keep it separate from raken scouts despite the loose bird-like comparison.

First appearances & development

The Great Hunt (1990), particularly chapter 42, provides an early named sighting with Seanchan soldiers. The authorized 1997 guide develops the handler and breeding account, later echoed in references. The form is fictional fauna, not a demonstrated extinct terrestrial bird lineage merely because some illustrations resemble terror birds.

Canon & continuity

Encyclopaedia WoT supplies chapter references for the leashed animals and their later tracking role. The public Corlm revision explicitly cites the exotic-animals section of the 1997 guide for behavior and breeding. The guide is reference-mediated; actual creator testimony connecting corlm to a prehistoric bird has not been established here.
