Overview

Stone-giants appear during the mountain storm in The Hobbit, throwing rocks as Thorin's company seeks shelter. Their play creates mortal danger for smaller travellers without supplying a detailed account of giant society or biological origins. Other references and stories about giants within Middle-earth do not automatically prove that every local legend describes the same population. The selected episode is brief enough that uncertainty is an essential part of its creature profile.

An Unexpected Journey expands that passage into an encounter with colossal figures seemingly made from the mountains' stone. That is a clear film interpretation, rather than an anatomical description supplied in equal detail by the novel. This entry keeps the two treatments together for comparison while labeling the visual expansion. It does not declare the giants identical to trolls or Ents, or manufacture a taxonomy from the many speculative ways readers have tried to fit them into the later legendarium.

First appearances & development

This profile uses 1937 novel and 2012 film as its selected publication context. The bibliography identifies particular published narratives, poems, manuscript histories or an explicitly named adaptation. Publication dates describe those works, not a claim that all the underlying texts were composed then. Posthumous editorial syntheses and earlier draft versions are kept distinct from Tolkien's lifetime novels.

02

Canon & continuity

Tolkien Gateway is an independent, citation-bearing reference rather than an official publisher source. Its named textual references support the bounded identification and scene comparison here. Public article and MediaWiki API reads were used for the creature accounts. The bibliography directs readers to the primary works; no complete reread of every cited volume or manuscript is claimed.

Selected bibliography
