Overview
Huorns are tree-like beings associated with Fangorn and the Ents, able to move and perceive despite an outward resemblance to woodland. The story leaves open whether they are Ents becoming more tree-like, trees becoming more Ent-like, or include both paths. Merry's explanation is a character's understanding rather than a definitive biological origin. Their limited communication with travellers should not be confused with complete lack of awareness or intent.
Directed by the Ents, Huorns move beyond the forest and become an ominous presence around the Hornburg. Their intervention makes an apparently passive landscape a participant in the defeat of Saruman's forces. This entry therefore groups them by the distinctive tree-creature role, with browsing priority two, rather than claiming a fully documented civilization. It preserves their relationship to Ents without treating Huorn and Ent as synonyms or assigning every dangerous tree in Middle-earth to this category.
First appearances & development
This profile uses 1954 and 1955 novel as its selected publication context. The bibliography identifies particular published narratives, poems, manuscript histories or an explicitly named adaptation. Publication dates describe those works, not a claim that all the underlying texts were composed then. Posthumous editorial syntheses and earlier draft versions are kept distinct from Tolkien's lifetime novels.
Canon & continuity
Tolkien Gateway is an independent, citation-bearing reference rather than an official publisher source. Its named textual references support the bounded identification and scene comparison here. Public article and MediaWiki API reads were used for the creature accounts. The bibliography directs readers to the primary works; no complete reread of every cited volume or manuscript is claimed.
