Overview
A shambling mound looks like a heap of decaying vegetation, but the third-edition revised SRD identifies it as a carnivorous plant with sensory organs and a brain in its upper body. That account describes a very heavy body, roughly six feet tall when upright, with two arm-like appendages used to batter and constrict. Forest and swamp concealment receives a special rules benefit. Electricity strengthens it in that edition by temporarily increasing Constitution, rather than simply restoring a specified number of hit points.
The 2014 fifth-edition account instead uses lightning to heal the mound. Fire and cold are resisted, and blindsight permits nearby perception without ordinary vision. Two successful slams against the same smaller victim establish the hold needed for Engulf. Inside, the captive is blinded, restrained and unable to breathe, with a Constitution save governing further crushing injury. The captive travels with the mound, so the threat can carry someone away rather than remain a stationary patch of vegetation. Only one creature can be engulfed at once.
The revised 2025 version retains lightning absorption and forest or swamp habitat, but changes how the body attacks. Three Charged Tendril strikes combine impact with electrical injury and can pull smaller targets closer. One strike can be replaced by Engulf, which now begins with the target's Strength save instead of requiring the legacy pair of successful slams. The held creature is blinded and restrained and suffers electrical damage on its own turns. It moves with the mound without increasing movement cost; the single-captive limit remains.
First appearances & development
The selected bibliography follows the 2000 Monster Manual into the third-edition revision and compares the 2014 and 2025 fifth-edition treatments. The revised SRD is a rules witness for its own edition, not a fresh reading of the complete 2000 book. No exhaustive original-debut history is established.
Canon & continuity
Official legacy and revised creature blocks were inspected alongside the older SRD's reproduced creature text. The profile compares specified abilities and habitat without borrowing reader comments, homebrew statistics or hypothetical physiology. A book's publication year identifies the edition; older material is not silently presented as the latest rules.
