Overview
The self-loathing beast is a threatening manifestation produced on a psi-moon that makes Rimmer's inner life into a physical environment. Its danger follows the emotional structure of that episode rather than an ordinary food chain or breeding cycle. The creature belongs with the materialized hostile forces that imprison and humiliate him, turning a familiar character trait into something the crew must confront.
The official production account says Mike Tucker repurposed an unused design prepared for the Destroyer in Doctor Who's 1989 Battlefield. That is a documented artwork connection, not a claim that the two fictional creatures share ancestry or a universe. The aired monster is never fully displayed; a discarded shot appears among Series V DVD material. Such footage can clarify production intent, but its anatomy should not silently replace the limited transmitted presentation.
First appearances & development
Terrorform (1992) depicts the creature on a psi-moon shaped by Rimmer's psyche. The bibliography distinguishes transmitted television, published scripts and later official commentary. These dates identify the treatments used here; they do not claim that each detail was present in the earliest draft. The show's novels, deleted material and television continuity can take different paths.
Canon & continuity
The linked Grant Naylor Productions episode guide directly identifies this creature and its fictional function. Additional official episode and production material supports the specific credits, narrative consequences or version differences discussed here. These sources are bounded treatments; a second reference article is not represented as a second independent story appearance.

Family, evolution & connections
An unused Destroyer design for Doctor Who: Battlefield
Red Dwarf’s official Terrorform guide states that Mike Tucker repurposed a sketch originally made for the Destroyer in Doctor Who’s 1989 Battlefield after that design was unused. The resulting Self-loathing beast was never fully shown in the aired episode; a removed shot survives on the Series V DVD. This documents production reuse, not shared fictional identity, ancestry or an aired crossover.
