Overview
The polymorph is a genetically engineered shapeshifter that feeds on emotions. Its ability to take convenient or frightening forms makes ordinary surroundings unreliable, but its most distinctive effect is on personality. Removing a particular emotion changes how a crew member handles danger and responsibility, allowing the same encounter to function as horror and character comedy. The official database identifies the specific losses as Rimmer’s anger, Lister’s fear, Cat’s vanity and Kryten’s guilt; its design was intended to produce a warrior adaptable to any terrain.
Emohawk: Polymorph II revisits the idea through a different specimen and circumstances. That does not make every version's behaviour identical, and remastered edits can alter the resolution of earlier events. This entry concerns the Red Dwarf organism, not a generic transformation spell or all shapeshifters across science fiction, whose powers and feeding patterns may be unrelated.
